Apple’s iOS7 PassBook – What Does it Mean for Restaurant Operators?

By Bijan Shahrokhi in Mobile Payment

Apple announced their new Operating System last week. iOS7 is Apple’s biggest iOS overhaul since the launch of the iPhone. With Johnny Ive’s leadership of both the design and technology teams, we all expected a major update to the new operating system.

Apple PassBook was one of the updated applications in the new operating system. Two key updates were made to Apple’s digital wallet iPhone PassBook:

1- Scan Code feature

2- Share with SMS, Email, Airdrop (Apple’s new sharing service via Bluetooth & WiFi)

The Scan Code helps users quickly scan virtual coupons, passes, etc. and save them on their phone. This is an interesting feature that will speed up the mobile coupon’s adoption rate.

Apple also aims to encourage PassBook adoption by allowing the sharing of virtual cards, passes, boarding passes, etc. This feature may become popular for sharing multi usage digital coupons

What does it mean for the restaurant operator?

All in all, these are great new features for restaurant operators. It means restaurant operators can offer digital coupons that can be easily saved on the customer’s phone. It means that promotions can be printed on a receipt, which can then be scanned and saved on a phone right away. More importantly, word of mouth marketing is more easily achieved as customers share the digital coupon with their friends and family.
